JERSEY

A walker’s paradise

The beautiful Channel Island offers miles of paths to explore by foot, as well as rich history, fantastic food and stunning beaches

The largest of the Channel Islands, Jersey is the perfect destination for all walking enthusiasts. With an amazingly diverse landscape given its compact size, it’s a haven for visitors wishing to explore at their own pace. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or seeking more leisurely strolls, you’re never far from a breathtaking ocean view, flower-filled meadow or idyllic sandy beach.

The island isn’t only a draw for its lovely scenery. Jersey has a distinctive Anglo-French flavour, thanks to its position between France and England, while its fascinating history includes 300 years under medieval Norman rule. A thriving foodie scene offers temptations like fresh seafood, Jersey Royal potatoes and cream from Jersey’s iconic dairy cows.

Even better, Jersey’s sheltered location in the Gulf of St Malo means a milder climate than many parts of the British Isles, and it typically enjoys more hours of sunshine.

Walking routes you’ll love

Despite being just 14km/nine miles across, Jersey has a network of more than 800km/500 miles of paths catering for all walking abilities. Within short distances, experience rugged cliff paths carpeted with yellow gorse, wooded valleys and tranquil country lanes; along the way, you’ll glimpse ancient dolmens, secret coves and forgotten chapels.

For a self-guided adventure, it’s easy to explore Jersey independently on foot. The island enjoys excellent signage, with many trails family-friendly. jersey.com/holidays/active/walking/.

If you’d like the satisfaction of a longer challenge, lace up your boots and tackle the Jersey Coastal Path, a 77km/48-mile circuit of the coastline, typically taking four days to complete. The route starts and ends in the capital, St Helier, and mostly sits within Jersey National Park (see jerseynationalpark.com).

For a more curated walking experience, consider a themed tour with one of Jersey’s expert guides. Trace the island’s poignant history under German occupation during the Second World War; savour culinary delights, including locally distilled gin, on a professional chef’s tour; or gain insights into Jersey’s incredible flora and fauna on a nature walk – during spring, the valleys and wetlands come alive with vibrant blooms and bird calls.

Remember to reserve time for highlights including atmospheric medieval Mont Orgueil Castle, the island’s main defence for four centuries. Don’t forget to visit stunning beaches like Plémont Bay, in the north-west, and captivating fishing towns like pretty St Aubin.

So easy to get to
