Welcome from the editor

Welcome to the first ever digital issue of walk! We’ve filled it with familiar walk features, plus some special treats and surprises only possible in a digital magazine. As we celebrate 90 years of the Ramblers, our anniversary timeline reveals how we’ve transformed landscapes and got Britain out walking for the past nine decades. We’re marking another anniversary, too: 75 years of the National Parks and Access to the Countryside Act, which – thanks to Ramblers campaigning – gave people a legally protected right to enjoy the countryside. Our feature immerses you in the beauty of Britain’s national parks and explores their past, present and future.

This issue is bursting with winter walking inspiration, with 10 cosy pub walks & eight Ramblers Routes (with mini-videos) that are perfect for festive rambles with family and friends. And don’t miss our interview with comedian, musician and Strictly winner, Bill Bailey, who shares his great passion for walking and most memorable hikes.

We’ve added a buyer’s guide video to our Gear on Test reviews of waterproof walking jackets, and five downloadable recipe cards to our Masterclass on nutrition for walkers. We’ve also super-sized our crossword for our 90th birthday, and added an interactive quiz.

Following 25 years of editing printed magazines, a digital magazine has been a new experience for me – and I know it will be for some of you too. I’ve enjoyed discovering the extra features it offers, and I’m excited to share it with you. Let us know what you think of it, and please share it widely.

Have a wonderful winter of walking!
